German President Horst Köhler has expressed support for the aspirations of Croatia, other former Yugoslav republics, and Albania to join the European Union.
Köhler told reporters following a meeting with Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, that this was one way of ensuring long-term stability and prosperity in the Balkans. Mesic told the German president that his country would do everything in its power to meet the EU's conditions for entry by 2010. Croatia is the first stop on President Köhler's five-day visit to the region, which will also take him to Macedonia.
