In his first major speech since fiercely disputed elections, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe aggressively accused the main opposition party of being British political puppets.
In a rally to thousands of his supporters celebrating the 28th anniversary of independence from Britain, 84-year-old Mugabe repeatedly said democracy had only been established in Zimbabwe after the end of whites-only rule. Significantly he did not address the outcome of the contested March presidential elections the results of which have still not been announced. Elsewhere, South African dock workers are refusing to unload a ship carrying arms from China destined for Zimbabwe defying a government decision to allow the arms be transported by road through South Africa to Zimbabwe.
