Heavy mortar battles in Somalia's capital Mogadishu claimed at least 29 lives on Sunday as Ethiopian-backed Somali forces clashed with Islamist insurgents near a hospital.
A prominent human rights group, Elman, says it has counted 81 people killed over 24 hours. Correspondents say the interim government backed by Ethiopian forces which entered Somalia in 2006 are trying to oust remnants of a sharia courts movement from Mogadishu's northern neighbourhood of Huriwaa.
