The Paris city council has voted to award honorary citizenship to the Dalai Lama as anti-French protests continue in China.
Socialist Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe said the French capital wished to pay tribute to a "champion of peace". The honour was opposed by the party of President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has been trying to smooth out tense relations with Beijing following a chaotic Olympic torch relay in Paris two weeks ago. Chinese protesters have been picketing outlets of the French supermarket Carrefour, accusing it of supporting the Dalai Lama.
