Czech trade unions declare strike alert over reforms ... hold events in a number of cities to mark May Day.
The German Federation of Trade Unions, the DGB, is holding its main rally in Mainz. Among those planning to attend is the chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Kurt Beck. The theme of this year's event is the need to create well-paying jobs. The DGB has called on the government to introduce a minimum wage. Major rallies are also to be held in Hamburg, Berlin and Nuremberg. There, about 1,000 supporters of the extreme-right NPD are expected to hold a demonstration. Several thousand people are expected to turn up for a counter demonstration and police are bracing for possible clashes.
