Last year, the court reopened the case and meted out a life sentence for Steinbauer, but its verdict was cancelled by the high court. The high court called some new evidence, on the basis of which the regional court meted out the life sentence, pure speculations. It returned the case to the regional court and ordered the review of indirect evidence. Steinbauer strangled to death a woman with a handbag belt in January 2003, most probably for money. In April 2006, Steinbauer was sentenced to 13 years in prison for having strangled to death a student, aged 16, with a ribbon in 2004.
