The first stage of the international Olympic torch relay in China has been held without any major disruptions.
Thousands of people cheered and waved Chinese flags as a total of around 120 runners carried the Olympic flame through the streets of Hong Kong. There was a high police presence to ensure that the relay was trouble-free. Police detained several activists ahead of the eight-hour-long event. Previous stages of the relay, particularly in London and Paris, were disrupted by activists protesting mainly against Chinese rule in Tibet.
