The group of four major powers known as the Middle East Quartet has called on Israel and the Palestinian Authority to respect their commitments to peace negotiations.
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon used a Quartet meeting in London to appeal to Israel to stop expanding settlements on Palestinian territory. Ban also called on Palestinian leaders to take action to prevent rocket attacks on Israel. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice criticised Arab states for failing to fulfil their funding commitments to the Palestinian Authority. US officials say only about 20 percent of the funds that Arab nations have pledged, has been paid. The Quartet is made up of the United Nations, the European Union, Russia and the United States.
