Betancourt and 14 other hostages were rescued overnight by Colombian army commandos posing as FARC guerrillas. At a press conference at the airport, the former presidential candidate vowed to work tirelessly for the freedom of some 700 people still believed to be detained by the leftist rebels. German Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeier has joined other world leaders in congratulating the Colombian government on the rescue that was carried out without a single shot being fired. He expressed hope that the remaining FARC hostages could also be released without bloodshed.
